How to setup Gmail in Microsoft Office OutLook 2007

I am rather excited to setup my Gmail in Outlook!

Here was what I did:

Step 1) After you have already open your Microsoft Office OutLook 2007, go to Tools and select Account Settings.

Step 2) Ensure the option for Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP or HTTP is selected. (It is the default option)

*If you have closed Outlook and open it again (or have previously setup another account), you will see the screen below first. Just choose New and you will see the screen above for you to choose the Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP or HTTP.

Step 3) Put in your Name (How you want it to appear to your email recipient), Email Address (the one you registered with), and of course the Password. Microsoft Office OutLook 2007 still requires you to type in your password 2 times to ensure you have entered it correct. I feel it is time they learn from Twitter! Just let us key in once!

Step 4) Then you have to scroll to the bottom right and check the Manually configure server settings or additional server types, before clicking Next.

Step 5) Ensure the option for Internet E-mail is selected. (This is the default option)

Step 6) The next screen needs more care. You will have to put in your Name and Email Address and the Incoming mail server setting and the Outgoing mail server setting (also known as SMTP), besides your account details like User Name and Password.

Make sure that your User Name and the Email Address tallies (highlighted in purple circle).

Step 7) At this point, choose Next. (If you want to go to More Settings, please don't bother. I will explain later)

Step 8) Now go to Tools and select Account Settings. This is for you to go back to the Account Setting to change some of the existing setting.

Step 9) You should see the email that you have keyed in earlier. Just click once on that Gmail account and click on Change. This will bring you to the setting for that email. 

Important: If you do not click to select that Gmail account, you may change the setting for another email account.

If you have other email accounts setup before, they should all appear here too. 

Step 10) Click on the Outgoing Server Tab. Check the option for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. The default setting applies: Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

Step 11) Go to Advanced Tab. Ensure that you have updated the Incoming Server (IMAP) to 993 and the Outgoing server (SMTP) to 587. You need to make sure the encrypted connection for the Incoming Server (IMAP) is set to SSL and the encrypted connection for the Outgoing server (SMTP) is set to TLS. Click on OK to continue.

Step 12) At this moment, I would advice you to do a check before you leave the setup. Click on Test Account Settings.

If your settings are successful, you should see the following screens. 

Please leave your Outlook running with internet connection. In my experience, I had to wait like around 1hr for my Gmail to be properly sync-ed (due to the number of emails inside).

If your configurations are incorrect, click on More Settings to amend your settings.

NOTE
If at Step 7 you clicked on More Settings, Microsoft Outlook will accept your settings. But the value for Outgoing server (SMTP) that you put in will be re-set to 25. That is why you need to go to Step 8 (eg: open the settings again) to put in the values.

You will also need to close Microsoft Outlook and restart it again (waiting or cooling period not required) to activate the new account.
