Quote of the day: Henry Youngman

Americans are getting stronger. Twenty years ago, it took two people to carry ten dollars' worth of groceries. Today, a five-year-old can do it.

Such an under statement.

Imagine my Darlings being able to eat two days worth of food in one day?

This is really dear to our hearts or pockets. Especially with the upcoming elections.

I may not be able to see or provide good solutions but I certainly am able to see when incentives are thrown to the people to buy their short term happiness.

This brings me to ponder, would a good business man run a country in a better state than a politician?

Probably. At least better than a scientist or actor would. I am not discriminating against jobs but what you have experienced will shape what your decisions will be - hammer or iron out your thoughts!

It is certainly a cool thing if Mr Trump gets to the seat, I will support him if he does. Not so for our Singapore ministers though. Have they really been through hardships and live our lives?

I come from a humble background and will always try to remain humble if I can. Why reach for the moon when it is tough to put together a roof over my head. And I abhor those parents who teach their kids nothing about humanity.

If only the world is aware of all the issues: poverty faced by the poor and needy, loneliness by the rich, health problems by the overfed, lack of self development by the young, lack of discipline by the addicts.

And me? Lack of determination and discipline to hold a thought. Where was I?

Oh yes. The young are growing stronger...

Windows 7 - Service Pack 1

Just as Singapore is having its election (another cycle has come to passed), Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is also launched.

It just feels so sick (yes, sick) that they cannot call it another name but Service Pack 1. (yes, as sick as that lump in my throat, if you know what I mean).

Here was what I did:

I went to install it, a good 5 minutes and the restart cleared my MSN history and all that I was doing before the restart. And I got this screen after all the dust settled themselves.

Click on the pictures to view their normal size

And this came up. Yes, my taskbar floats at the top of my screen so that it is easy for me to see what time it is (I don't have a watch and if you want to give me one, please do donate to me at my Support page. )

Then It (by "it" I mean Windows 7) tells me that the installation is successful:

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)
Installation date: 2/24/2011 11:07PM
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Important
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is a recommended collection of updates and improvements to Windows that are combined into a single installable update. The service pack can help make your computer safer and more reliable. A typical installation will take about 30 minutes to complete, and you will have to restart your computer about halfway through the process.
More information:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=206783Help and Support:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=206784

Please do this update!

It will really take a good half an hour to complete the whole thing.
Also, do ignore some of the stupid stuff (like Silverlight or bitlocker updates) if you really do not need it. But do this first. This IS important!!!

Walk in February 2011

Took these pictures in one of my February walks.

They certainly signifies spring!

I am glad I am on track on a few things: exercising, learning and getting more organised about my life.

Started yoga and walking my Darlings further and further. They are in a better shape now (at least not round shape!) And I am also benefiting from these walks. Still drenched with sweat at these sessions but it feels really good!

Have also continued to cook more vegetables for my Darlings and they love it. Even my brother commented that all the vegetables I cook are so crisp and I told Darling No 1 my secret. Will do a post on how to cook nice crispy vegetable dish soon.

By the way. The viewer of my camera is spoilt and it will take up more battery when I take pictures Will need to get new recharge-able batteries soon.

Well enjoy the pictures!

How to maximize one-to-one meetings

Read this article from smart brief on how to maximize meetings that consist of only two persons.
I think this article talks mostly about those performance appraisal kind of meetings which went off track, but this could work for departmental meetings too where the most extroverted manager will lead the discussion.
However, I strongly feel that in Asian society, like Singapore, this may not be truly applicable.
In most of the older generation, age 40 and above (as in 2011), staff tend not want to speak again their supervisers or voice out their opinions in case the idealogy is different. Younger staff may not have formed their opinions or do not see the importance of contribution.
Or there could be bosses who rely on power play for their ego trips.
But all things being equal, do what should be done and prioritise what can be done only by you.

Lucky Draw (22 Feb 2011)

I got it, I got it!

Today NC drew my name out of a company lucky draw... gonna think who to give to:

1) myself
2) my mother
3) my father
4) Darling No 1
5) Darling No 1's mother
6) etc

I think I will just... give it to.... (to be decided later).

Anyways I was feeling so sick yesterday that I dragged myself to Shop and Save (I usually really enjoy shopping for groceries) to get myself a bottle (in the end I got 6) of Three Legs Cooling Water (the Singapore Version).

It says on the bottle:

This preparation is a traditional medicine. It contains 200mg of Gypsum Gibrosum extract which is traditionally used for symptomatic relief of body heatiness.
Dosage
Adult: 1 bottle each time, 4 times daily
8-12 years - 1/2 bottle each time, 4 times daily
4-7 years - 1/3 bottl each time, 4 times daily
Store in a cool, dry place and keep out of reach of children
Website: www.wenken.com
"Allowed for sale as a Chinese Proprietary Medicine based on information submitted to the Authority. Consumer discretion is advised.

Well, after drinking 1 bottle last night, I felt so much better! It is definitely not a psychological effect. Thus it is highly recommended by me, if you feel heaty. It actually prints 4pictures, 1 each of durian, satay, 2 kids cycling and a scene of construction. I think they are trying to depict times that you should drink it.

And since the bottle said to drink 4 times a day, I brought 2 bottles to work today. Took 1 after lunch and saw my colleague CLH who was coughing and I passed that to her (Maybe my "Your cough is irritating" made her took that bottle, haha)

I have never tried this because I always drink cold Lipton tea as a relief. And today's weather was really hot!

Anyway the lucky draw made me felt lucky! I was one of the 2 person who got that bird's nest, the other was AT. And I never thought NC would draw my name! hahaha... yeah, gotta sleep early, need lots of rest!

Internet 2011

I read with interest the article on The Secret behind Searches or something like that. This article was published in the Today Paper on 14 February 2011.

As Henry Tam, SmartBrief's chief product officer, puts it: there are plenty of great ideas out there, it all comes down to execution.

It is easy for any one to give ideas but sometimes, one may be lost in the mire of ideas or simply get too carried away with the micro of things. Or one somehow loses focus of the end point.

My point is, there maybe a million ways to thwart Google's god-like search engine's clutches. Who knows, there maybe more than a few ways to be listed in the top searches, other than paying good money (to Google) for it.

The end result is simply relevance.

Imagine I am going through my pile of clothes, looking for my pink scarf that will match my pink heels. The first thing that catches my attention is a pink lacy bra. I may hold it in my hands for a few second while deciding if I should wear it, but I do want to continue my search for my pink scarf. Another pink item turns out, this time a pink night gown, a no-no for going out. And my search continues.

How relevant are the bra and night gown? Enough to be the top items that comes up, but they are not what I wanted.

Or, in another scenerio, my mother happens to be searching in the room next door. Can u say that we are looking for the same item since the time zone is the same? Oh, I do not want to bring that pink apple she just dug out of the fridge!

Will Google be able to sieve out who they can trust? I certainly hope they can, because I trust them.

Cai Shen Ye (財神爺)- Feb 2011

These are some of the Cai Shen Ye (財神爺) pictures that I took at the Hong Bao River yesterday.

He is actually very tall and is the highlight in the event. Usually in Singapore, we focus on

寿

These mean:

Good Fortune (Fu)
Prosperity (Lu)
Longevity (Shou).

And are usually represented by 3 old men:

Here is another picture that I took there. Honestly I don't know what this is suppose to represent. Either Dragon or Phoenix

Did a search and this is an article on his works:

http://english.cri.cn/4026/2008/05/26/1321@361879_1.htm

Nanjing papercutting together with cloud brocades and sculpture are considered the three craft treasures of the country's former southern capital city. Zhang Fanglin, in his late 50s, is a fourth-generation descendant of Nanjing's "Magic Scissors Zhang," a master papercutter.
Years ago, when Zhang Fanglin gave a papercutting demonstration in the city's Shangxi Road Square, people were amazed at his fine art. They asked if his technique was Yangzhou style, which features novel and pretty design, soft and vigorous lines. They were quite surprised when he told them his papercuts were done in Nanjing's own more vivid and full-form style. At present, Nanjing papercutting is listed on Jiangsu Province's intangible cultural heritage list and anticipates being added to the national list.
As one of the representatives of Nanjing-style papercutting, Zhang Fanglin was conferred as a "First Rate Artist of Folk Arts and Crafts" by UNESCO, the scientific and cultural organzation of the United Nations. He hails from a papercutting family, the son of Zhang Jigen, a well-known late papercutting master artist. The younger Zhang has been doing papercutting for more than 40 years.
